Can dogs and cats eat spices?

Quick answer

For most spices there is no veterinary literature at all, and the honest answer is that nobody has studied it. What is documented is narrower and more useful than a list of spices: onion and garlic in any form, including powdered, damage red blood cells in dogs and cats and are the single most common way a seasoned human dish harms a pet; salt in quantity causes sodium toxicosis; and concentrated essential oils are a genuine hazard, disproportionately to cats, because cats clear phenolic compounds poorly. The practical rule that follows is not about spices at all. It is that the danger in a leftover curry, a roast dinner or a bowl of pasta sauce is usually the allium in it.

Onion and garlic are the real answer

Allium species — onion, garlic, leek, chive and shallot — contain organosulfur compounds that oxidise haemoglobin in dogs and cats, damaging red blood cells and producing haemolytic anaemia. The mechanism is well characterised, the species susceptibility is documented, and cats are more sensitive than dogs. Signs can be delayed by days, which is part of why the connection is often missed.

The point most relevant to a spice catalogue is that dehydrated and powdered forms are covered too, and are worse per gram than the fresh vegetable because the water has been removed. A teaspoon of onion powder is not a small amount of onion. Garlic powder, onion powder and the many blends built on them — and roughly a third of the blends in this catalogue contain one or both — carry the same concern as the vegetable.

This is why the answer to "can my dog eat this dish" is usually decided before the spices are considered at all. A dish seasoned with cumin, coriander and turmeric and built on a base of fried onion and garlic is a problem because of the base.

Cats and essential oils, and why the species matters

Cats are disproportionately affected by concentrated essential oils, and the reason is metabolic rather than behavioural. Glucuronide conjugation is the pathway most phenolic compounds are cleared by, and cats have limited capacity for it, so compounds that a dog or a person processes and excretes accumulate instead. Exposure can be oral, dermal or through grooming after contact.

The compounds this bears on are ones a spice catalogue holds records for: eugenol from clove, cinnamaldehyde from cinnamon and cassia, thymol from thyme, carvacrol from oregano. What matters is the form. These are hazards as distilled oils — in a diffuser, a cleaning product, a topical preparation or a bottle of "natural" flea treatment — and not as the dried spice in a food cupboard. The practical consequence is that a cat in a household that uses clove or cinnamon oil is at a kind of risk that a cat in a household that cooks with the spices is not.

Salt, and the seasoning nobody counts

Sodium ion toxicosis is documented in companion animals and depends heavily on water availability — an animal with free access to water tolerates far more than one without. The exposures that produce it are not table salt sprinkled on food but concentrated sources: salt dough ornaments, sea water, rock salt used for de-icing, and heavily salted human food given repeatedly.

It is included here because salt is the one seasoning that appears in essentially every savoury dish and is the one nobody thinks of as a spice when asking whether a dish is safe.

What is not known, and why that is not reassurance

For the great majority of the spices in this catalogue, no veterinary source assesses whether a dog or a cat can eat them. That is not a finding of safety. It is an absence of research, and the two are routinely confused by pages that list spices as "safe for dogs" on no stated basis whatever.
