What to use instead of xawaash
Quick answer
The closest option is Hawaij, rated acceptable. Hawaij for soup shares the name and much of the composition, but it is turmeric- and pepper-forward and untoasted, so rice and meat come out sharper and yellower and without xawaash’s toasty warmth. Hawaij for coffee is a different blend entirely and must not be used.
It will not do for: Bariis, where the toasted aroma is the point; Anything, if the hawaij on hand is the coffee blend.
